Channelling your inner Moochinista requires one part cunning, two parts firm determination and a boat load of blind faith. But it’s hard to find that sea of internal calm when the world around you is in chaos. Even after you have banished a Sméagol from your life, negative energy can linger.

So whether you just moved into the Bates Motel, or have finally rid yourself of the roommate from hell, here’s a three step cleanse to protect your chi and freshen the energy of your space.

Step 1: Gather the tools

Smudging Agent

Sage Grass

As with any dirty job a strong cleaning agent is required, also known as a smudging herb.  You can use any incense of your choice, or pick up dried sage grass from your local market.

Energy Boxes
According to the Vedic belief system, dark energy is attracted to a void. Size doesn’t matter. These boxes act as vacuums that suck negative energy out of your space- and are not to hold any baddies inside al la Ghost busters.

Chant
Mantra, favorite prayer or goalAfter a traumatic emotional event, many people feel hollow inside. That is literally an energetic hole, and as mentioned above, dark energy is attracted to a void. Therefore it’s important before starting to have a mantra prepared. Select your favourite prayer or yoga chant, or write down a goal you are going to achieve as a result of this cleanse. It should be something that fills you with positivity. You have to memorize it so keep it simple and short. Nature sounds or yoga music will also help you concentrate.

Step 2. Banish the Blues!

Undertaking a spiritual cleanse is best done directly after a physical cleaning- though this isn’t always possible in eerie emergencies.

Place the open boxes on their sides in the corners of the room or on window sills, with their bottoms resting against the walls or windows. These boxes provide an energy portal out of your space. If you share a wall with neighbours only place boxes against exterior walls. Bad energy is like a cold – tough to get rid of but easy to catch.

Leave a window cracked to avoid setting off your smoke alarm if using sage for the ceremony.

Step 3. Fresh Focus

Turn on your cd and take a moment to center yourself. Light the smudging tool while repeating your mantra.

If using incense, find a cushy spot, and close your eyes. If using dried sage, light it and walk around the space, slowly moving it about a foot from the walls so that the smoke hits all the corners of your space.

Repeat your mantra until it is a steady hum in your mind, like background noise. Picture the negative energy as a cloud of smoke, being sucked out through the boxes you have placed around the rooms. Do this for at least 10 minutes or longer if you can manage it. Remember to breathe.

Once balance has been achieved, you can store the boxes away for next year.

Tip:
To maximize the effort you’ve made, save a pinch of ash from the incense and add it to some water in a spray bottle. Now that you have used it to battle bad vibes, it is infused with your positive energy. You can use it to spruce up your spiritual space all year round.

Om, Shaanti!
